Jim Chavez

Jim is Keystone’s Director of Technical Services Business Development. In addition, he is currently providing global security consulting services for National Laboratories, Government Agencies, and others. He is recently retired as Vice President of the Energy and Global Security Division and Vice President of Global Security programs at Sandia National Laboratories. Jim managed a diverse program portfolio that included projects in global security, energy technologies, weapon, force, and critical asset protection, and energy technologies. Jim also led Sandia´s Global Security Program Management Unit. The program mission encompassed nonproliferation and arms control; securing and safeguarding nuclear weapons and nuclear materials; protecting critical U.S. government assets and installations; ensuring the resilience of physical and cyber infrastructures; and reducing the risks of terrorist threats and catastrophic events.

In his 35-year career at Sandia, Jim worked in a wide range of fields including energy research, nuclear security, intelligence analysis, and nonproliferation and held a variety of positions at Sandia National Laboratories. Prior to becoming a VP at Sandia, he served as Director of the Monitoring Systems Center and Director of the Remote Monitoring and Verification Program with responsibility for the sensor system and ground stations for the United States Nuclear Detonation Detection System. Before that, he was Director of the Systems Assessment and Research Center and Proliferation Program, with responsibility for intelligence programs that Sandia conducts for U.S. national security organizations. Other assignments at Sandia include Manager of Sandia´s Government Relations and Washington Office, Manager of the National Solar Thermal Test Facility, staff researcher on the development and demonstration of renewable energy technologies, research on nuclear reactor safety, and research on physical security for the U.S. State Department.

Jim is an active member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He is also a member of the New Mexico State University Mechanical Engineering Advisory Board. He is a past recipient of the Hispanic Professional Engineer Award for Professional Achievement.

Jim earned his BS in Mechanical Engineering at the New Mexico State University and his MS in Mechanical Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley.
